An accurate insulation price depends on the information that comes with the enquiry. The more of the following you can share at tender stage, the fewer assumptions go into the price and the fewer surprises there are on site.
1. Drawings and scope
- Mechanical layout or isometric drawings, or a marked-up schedule of pipe sizes and lengths
- Ductwork drawings with sizes, and which runs are supply, extract or fresh air
- Vessels, tanks and equipment to be insulated, with dimensions
- A clear line on what is in and out of scope, for example valves, pumps and supports
2. Specification
- The insulation specification, if there is one, including material and thickness
- Required finish: foil-faced, PVC, aluminium, stucco aluminium or stainless steel
- Any client or consultant standard the work must comply with. In Ireland and the UK, minimum insulation thicknesses are commonly set with reference to BS 5422
3. Operating conditions
- Operating temperature of each service: heating, chilled water, steam, process or refrigeration
- Whether pipework is internal or external, and any exposure to washdown, chemicals or impact
- Where condensation control is critical, for example on chilled and cold-water services
4. Site and programme
- Site location and access arrangements
- Whether the work is a new build or inside an operating facility
- Working at height requirements, such as scaffolding or MEWPs, and who provides them
- Proposed programme and any shutdown windows
5. Photographs for repairs and upgrades
For repairs, upgrades or retrofitting valve jackets on existing plant, clear photographs of the pipework, fittings and existing insulation are often enough for an initial price.
