External boiler flue ductwork insulated and clad by Lagforce at a metal recycling facility in Co. Meath, using mineral wool wired mat finished with aluminium cladding.

The work shown
The flue runs outdoors at high level, leaving one building, crossing the yard on steel support frames and dropping down at the far end. The route includes bends at both ends, changes of direction at the supports and a connection into a larger-diameter flue section. As the flue runs at height, the works were completed from a MEWP (mobile elevating work platform).
The flue was insulated with mineral wool wired mat, which holds its shape at flue temperatures and can be fitted closely around bends and supports. It was then finished with aluminium cladding fabricated in our own workshop for the straight runs, segmented bends and transitions, with the joints lapped to shed rain on an external run.
Why the flue was insulated and clad
Insulating an exhaust flue maintains the temperature of the flue gases, which keeps them flowing freely along the run and out of the flue. It also reduces heat loss and lowers the surface temperature of the ductwork. The aluminium cladding protects the insulation from weather and physical damage, which matters on an external run like this one that is exposed all year round.
